How could the United States let millions of innocent people be starved, brutalized, and discriminated like they were in World War II? Easily, they did not want to get involved. The US stayed neutral in WWII until the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was bombed by the Japanese on December 07, 1941.During World War II millions of Jews died in concentration camps. Concentration Camps are places where selected groups of people are restrained and are under cruel conditions, usually for political reasons and under inhumane conditions.

They are also large detention centers created for political opponents, aliens, specific ethnic or religious groups, civilians of a critical war-zone, or other groups of people, often during a war.In Germany, the Nazis established concentration camps almost immediately after assuming power on January 30, 1933. The security police had the authority to arrest anyone and to commit that person to a camp for an unclear period. The political police, known as the Gestapo, imposed “protective custody” on a wide variety of political opponents: Communists, socialists, religious dissenters, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and Jews. The Schutzstaffel, or protective units operated the camps with brutal military discipline.

During the 1930s six major camps were established: Dachau, Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, Flossenbürg, Mauthausen, and, for women, Ravensbrück. In 1939 these camps held about 25,000 prisoners.During World War II the camps increased in size and number. Important new ones included Auschwitz-Birkenau, Natzweiler, Neuengamme, Gross-Rosen, Stutthof, Lublin-Majdanek, Hinzert, Vught, Dora, and Bergen-Belsen. Millions of prisoners entered these camps from every occupied country of Europe: Jews, partisans, Soviet prisoners of war, and impressed foreign laborers. Early in 1942 the SS Central Office for Economy and Administration assumed operational control of the concentration camps, and inm..

.During the Holocaust, many labor and mass murder camps were built. Auschwitz and Birkenau were infamous for their heavy labor camps. Other camps also built were solely built for mass murders. At these mass murder camps, some used gas to poison the people. The Belzec concentration camp is an example of one of these camps.

It was established in February 1940 and on November 1, 1941, construction began at this death camp. It was opened for only 9 months and is reported that 600,000 people died there. Belzec had thecapacity to kill 15,000 a day. There are only two known survivors. The Belzec concentration camps were built on the orders of Hitler that were passeddown to Heinrich Himmler. Himmler, in turn, ordered Odilo Globocnik, the SS commissioner occupying Poland, to construct a camp at Belzec. One of thefirst gas chambers that were built was at Belzec. Deportees from Cracow, Radom, Galicia,Czechoslovakia, Holland, as well as Belzec went there.

Christian Wirth, formerly of the Brandenburg euthanasia program, built the gas chamber. His building contained three rectangular rooms, each about thirteen by twenty-six feet, with ceilings just over six feethigh.A 240-horsepower engine from a captured Russian tank was installed in a shed just outside, and exhaust fumes were piped into the chambers. Many believed that carbon monoxide was a reliable form of gassing. However, this form of gassing, at the beginning, functioned very inefficiently.

A report from a SS colonial concludes this. In it he says, [Sergeant] Hackenholt was making great efforts to get theengine running. But it doesn’t go up.

..My stopwatch showed it all, 50 minutes, 70 minutes, and the diesel did not start. The people wait inside the gas chamber. In vain…After 2 hours and 49 minutes-the stopwatch recorded it all-the diesel started…the people shut up in thosefour crowded chambers were alive, four times 750 in four time…
