Deepawali is an important festival. It is celebrated in the month of Kartik according to the Hindu calendar.

It falls in October-November. It is a festival of lights and fireworks. Many days before Deepawali, we start hearing the thundering noises of crackers all over the country. Deepawali is celebrated twenty days after Dussehra. Deepawali reminds us of the ideals of Lord Rama. This festival is linked with Lord Rama. It is said that on this day Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman after 14 years of exile. People lit earthen lamps to celebrate their return.

They decorated the whole city. This tradition continues till today. People begin to clean their houses many days earlier than the festivals. Houses and shops are whitewashed and decorated. On the Deepawali day, people kindle earthen lamps in their houses. They illuminate their houses with different kinds of light in the evening. Every nook and corner of the house is lighted with candles or lamps.

At night people worship goddess Lakshmi. The goddess Lakshmi is said to be the goddess of wealth. Houses, shops and temples present a beautiful look. The whole surroundings appear to be charged with joy and happiness.

They wear a festive look like a newly married bride. People wear new clothes. There is an exchange of gifts and sweets. People meet and greet each other. Children burn fire crackers. It is a time of good business. There is a great sale of sweets, toys, pictures, crackers and utensils on this day.

Candles are in great demand. There is a negative aspect of this festival. Too much of crackers pollute the atmosphere a lot. There are accidents of burning which spoil the whole atmosphere of pleasure. In addition, burning fire crackers not only causes pollution but it is also wastage of money. Lakhs of rupees are spent on fireworks. If those are spent on some social cause or on welfare programmes, they will lead to bring happiness in lives of lots of people. Gambling is also a dark side of this festival.

It ruins lives of many people. It should be checked.Despite, Deepawali is a festival of joy. Everyone is happy and gay on this way.
